    Similar to the our twill carbon fibre fabric, this Plain Weave fabric uses a different weave pattern known as plain weave. This different pattern is the result of the fibres being woven on-over-one-under instead of the one-over-two-under of the 2/2 twill. Although relatively similar in appearance the two patterns are very much distinguishable with the plain weave pattern often favoured in continental Europe (particularly Germany) and other parts of the world. The plain weave is also very well suited to smaller parts like iPod cases etc., owing to its smaller pattern. The carbon fabric is of course The finest quality available and suitable for use with carbon fibre laminating resin or other resin systems.

    Plain weave carbon fibre fabric is the 2nd most commonly used type of carbon cloth. Instead of having the distinctive diagonal pattern of 2/2 twill, plain weave is woven over-one-under-one leaving it with a simple grid pattern appearance. Plain weave might be selected over 2/2 twill for cosmetic reasons (matching fabric already used on a vehicle for example) or because its tighter weave makes it easier to handle without distorting it. If you need the fabric to 'drape' very easily into and over curved shapes then you might want to consider 2/2 twill instead which is better suited to such shapes.



    This carbon fibre cloth is suitable for use in wet-lay, vacuum bagging and resin infusion manufacture as well as for use as a single surface layer where parts are being made to look like carbon fibre (skinning). When using, only carbon fibre reinforcement in a part you should expect to use several layers of this fabric in each part. None-structural components like body panels and covers will typically require 3-6 layers of a carbon fibre cloth of this weight.

    The process in which carbon fiber is made is very similar to fiberglass. So many people have used fiberglass before whether it was a boat patch or a fun body panel on a motorcycle. We are excited to talk about one of the basic processes to lay up carbon fiber. Unfortunately there are so many different techniques and practices depending on the desired finish and weight. Carbon fiber can be purchased in many forms the most basic is in a weave that is a fabric. It is very pliable and dry. It is can be quite flexible and is really just a weaved material.

    The rigid parts that you see are made by wetting the cf fabric with resin. The most common resins are an epoxy based resin that use a hardening agent to cure. Once the fabric has the resin evenly spread it is allowed to cure and becomes very stiff. We think the easiest and one of the increasingly more popular ways people are using carbon fiber is a technique called skinning. Skinning is where the carbon is wet out and laid over an object to cover it in carbon fiber. Some of the most popular parts are the trim on cars. Ranging from mirrors to dash boards people put a layer of cf over them to make them look awesome!

    Some other tips: use only paper cups when mixing the resin. Use Aceton for cleaning the brushes. Replace the water between the different abrasive papers to avoid scratches. Do not sneeze on uncured resin. Use eye protection and wear those latex gloves! And remember, getting a part done takes a couple of days, at least! Most of the time is spent waiting for the resin to cure, and the rest of the time is spent sanding, sanding, and sanding... You get the point And be ready to do mistakes. A lot of them. It's normal. Just a part of the learning process.

    Vacuum Infusion Process / VIP / Teknik Vakum


    Vacuum Infusion process is a process that uses a two-sided mold that shapes both surfaces of a composite part. The lower mold is rigid, and commonly made from Fiberglass and coated with Polyester Gelcoat. The upper portion of the mold is made from a flexible membrane or vacuum bag. This vacuum bag can be a reusable silicone material or an extruded polymer film. Once the lay up is completed vacuum is applied to the mould cavity and the material is allowed to debulk. This process can be performed at either ambient or elevated temperature with ambient atmospheric pressure acting upon the vacuum bag.


    - Advantages Of Vacuum Infusion

    Vacuum Infusion, when done correctly, can produce parts of incredible strength and quality of appearance. The combination of vacuum pressure along with carefully placed vacuum consumables (such as peel - ply and infusion mesh) mean that the finished composite will have absorbed resin at the optimum resin -to- reinforcement ratio, avoiding resin-rich composites or variations in performance inevitable with traditional wet-lay manufacture.

    Vacuum Infusion process also eliminates some of the problems that can blight wet-lay composites, such as air voids (caused where the reinforcement has bridged around tight corners) and tiny air bubbles caused by air trapped within the laminate.

    The quality of epoxy ‘infusion resins’ means that resin infused parts can be made with strength to w
    eight ratios that can rival parts made using pre-impregnated (pre-preg) reinforcement systems.


    - Vacuum Infusion Process Set-up and Equipment

    When preparing to experiment with infusion, It is important to understand some general concepts about how materials are used and arranged. Keep in mind that every project is unique and this guide is not intended to provide the only available options. We will discuss some variations later. First, the general sequence of events that comprises vacuum infusion is illustrated in the following
    diagram.



    For the purpose of this guide, We will be focusing on one general set-up idea with the notion
    that resin will be infused into a center point in the laminate. From there, resin will be pulled
    outward via vacuum pressure. The final arrangement of materials should look something like
    this.
